Global environmental change presents an array of challenging problems
and research opportunities. I continue to be particularly interested
in and focused on land processes and the dynamics of terrestrial
ecosystems as these affect rising greenhouse gas levels while responding
to disturbance by natural phenomena and human activiites as well as to
enviornmental change. Integration and synthesis within an earth system
perspective are critical and this is an equally interesting and important
aspect of my research. My major interests and initiatives include:
- Modeling and analysis of the fundamental processes that are
responsible for terrestrial biogeochemistry, land-surface processes in
weather and climate, and disturbance regimes and associated ecosystem
responses and recovery;
- Design, development, and implementation of field and remote sensing
observation networks coordinated with intensive and long-term field
experiments and studies;
- Integration and sysntesis of environmental change observations within
comprehensive regional and global models; and
- Assessment of the regional and global impacts of environmental change on
terrestrial ecosystems.
