Walter Ross~ The Silent Firefly |

I wrote The Silent Firefly while I was studying under Alberto Ginastera in Buenos Aires. There were eleven other students at the Instituto Torcuato di Tella, all from Latin America except me. Ginastera told us each to write a work for an evening's program of new music. I has just bought a very charming book of Japanese folk poetry in English translation, and I decided to use eight of the poems to make a small cantata.
The work is representative of the avant-garde of the middle sixties. mostly unmeasured, atonal, everyone-plays-from-score, a-conductor-is-necessary, etc. The work is "atmospheric;" that is, mostly non-rhythmic tone colors. The soprano's line is atonal/intervallic. The overall effect is impressionistic.
