Overture to the Virginian Voyage was written with Michael Drayton's poem of the same name in mind, so it is, in effect, a tone poem. It is for a large orchestra: triple winds, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, two percussion, harp, and strings. It is tonal, but rather dissonant at times.
