Overture to an American Comedy

Overture to an American Comedy was commissioned by the University of Virginia Wind Ensemble who performed the work in celebration of their 50th anniversary.

The work opens with a curtain-raising fanfare and moves to a brisk allegro. The middle section is a "romantic episode. The fanfare returns to open the "second act". The first allegro returns in a varied form and is followed by a "chase scene" coda, the typical ending of many American film comedies.

Standard symphonic band with slip whistle and police whistle.
