Oboe Concerto

  1. Romanza (11.4MB .mp3)
  2. Pastorale (14.8MB .mp3)
  3. Danza (12.6MB .mp3)

My Oboe Concerto is one of a series of concertos I am writing for wind instruments.

The orchestra is harp and strings.

The work is modal/pandiatonic in melodic and harmonic design. The first movement is a slow Romanza, lento carezzando. The second is in a moderate, lightly bouncing 6/8. An adagio opens the last movment which leads to a rapid dance in 2/4

The opening movement of the concerto features the mellifluous, almost melancholy sound of the oboe in its high register. The oboe enters with a simple melody. Each successive entrance elaborates more and more on the melody with delicate arabesques until the movement fades to a quiet ending.

The second movement begins in a highly rhythmic and energetic manner which soon moves toward a contemplative cadenza. Then the energy returns in contrasting sections with the oboe sometimes moving vigorously or flowing lyrically over a rhythmic accompaniment.

A quiet, contemplative mood reminiscent of the opening of the concerto introduces the final movement. Suddenly the mood changes to a vigorous, rhythmical dance which alternates with tuneful, bravura melodic passages in the oboe. The coda begins con spirito with rapidly ascending flights in the solo, and the concerto ends with a flourish.
