Nocturne

I wrote this Nocturne for string orchestra in memory of Mollie Hereford, the daughter of the President of the University of Virginia, who was killed in a tragic accident on New Year's Eve. I began work on January 5th and the University and Community Symphony Orchestra premiered it a few days later on January 25.

The work is in the form of a rondo. It begins with the principal theme in the lower strings passing to the upper strings. After a chordal interlude the principal theme appears as a canon between the first violins and 'cellos. A transition leads to a short section of elaborate figuration in the upper strings. A restatement of the theme is followed by more elaboration in the upper strings. The composition ends with a short coda in which the lower strings recall a fragment of the theme pianissimo and pizzicato.
