The orchestra in this concerto is scored for timpani, four percussion, piano, and strings making the solo clarinet part quite prominent. As the orchestration suggests, the work, in the main, is full of rhythmic energy. The outer movements are quite dancy in effect. The middle movement, which does not use the percussion section touches on a cool jazz flavor. The form is ABA', with the central section somewhat reminiscent of a Satie Gymnopedie.
Clarinet Concerto was recently recorded by Richard Stoltzman with the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released as a CD on MMC Recordings as MMC2100. This CD also includes my Violin Concerto and Piano Concerto.
