Capriccio Furioso is a one-movement work for solo euphonium and band. The movement is in four distinct sections in the pattern ABCA'. The first and last sections are very similar and are in a march-like mood. The second section is much more relaxed and consists, principally, of a dialogue between the solo euphonium and the first Eb Alto SaxoPhone: The C section is a waltz which allows some technical display on the part of the soloist. The mood of the opening returns and the piece ends with a sprightly flourish. The melodic and harmonic language of the work is quasi-tonal, somewhat in a Bartokian manner.
The work is dedicated to Brian Bowman who encouraged me in its composition.
