My Nonet was commissioned by the Rivanna Quartet and the Albemarle Ensemble. Writing for nine soloists is quite a bit more of a compositional challenge than writing for full orchestra, so I accepted eagerly.
This thirteen minute work is in three movements. The first movement opens with a slow introduction followed by the main section, allegro energico which features rhythmic ideas alternating between strings and winds. A slower, more lyrical section follows, then the spirit of the main section returns, ending the movement.
The second movement is a set of six variations based on the chant O Gloriosa Virginum. I took the pitches of the chant and put my own rhythms to the notes to make the variations.
The last movement is a rollicking scherzo in a rapid 3/8 meter with contrasting sections in a fast 2/4.
