This is the playbill from the 1859 performance of Bryant's Minstrels at which "Dixie" (written by Dan Emmett and orginally called "I Wish I Was in Dixie's Land") premiered. Its popularity, north and south, was phenomenal, but its theme -- a former slave wishing he could go back to the old plantation -- was one of the most conventional in minstrel music.
