Mark Twain's first typewriter, bought in 1874, is the one on the right. In his autobiography he said that he had Tom Sawyer retyped from his handwritten manuscript, although others have suggested the first typed book may have been Life on the Mississippi (1882) instead. I don't have any idea who was the first American author to word process a book, or to post one on the Internet.
