ABSTRACT The Indian-made film Bandit Queen, directed by Shekhar Kapur, tells the true story of Phoolan Devi, a woman who was released from prison in February 1994 at age 35 after eleven years' imprisonment for committing robbery and murder. The child of low-caste impoverished parents in central India, Devi was sold into marriage at age 11 in 1970 for a bicycle and a cow. After being raped by her husband, Devi ran away from the marriage to lead a wanderer's life, suffering more abuse and eventually earning the name Bandit Queen for the plague that she became to the local authorities. The film includes moving and credible acting from Sunita Bhatt and Seema Biswas.
