ABSTRACT

Roland, Perry D. "A National Study of Online Thematic Indexing in Music Libraries." Masters Project, Department of Library and Information Studies, University of North Carolina, 1995.

Traditional access methods are sometimes unsatisfactory for music because it is fundamentally different from other materials, requiring more complete bibliographic description and additional methods of access. The purpose of this proposed study is to determine the need for thematic indexing among users of music research libraries in the United States. The study will be conducted using the descriptive survey methods. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and will be presented in a series of pie charts and bar graphs. The data obtained will be used to draw conclusions about several research questions: What are the information needs of the users of music libraries? Which, if any, of those needs might be served through online thematic indexing? What is the level of knowledge and usage among users of music materials of the tools which could be used for thematic indexing and retrieval?

This study is meant to furnish a baseline of information from which other researchers may develop additional research. For example: Do users of music libraries which support music technology curricula express a greater need for thematic indexing? What is the level of interest in thematic indexing among users who access the library electronically? What effect do hypertext and hypermedia technologies have upon providing content indexing for music materials? How do the cost and availability of technology impact upon the provision of new access services?
