Planning for Healthier Communities
Welcome!
Teaching undergraduate and graduate students, researching the impact of institutions on population health and serving my university and local community are exciting pursuits for me. I teach neighborhood planning workshops for graduate and undergraduate students focusing on team building and plan development, and a healthy communities seminar providing planners with an understanding of the health impacts of land use, zoning and other similar decisions. My research focus is on the inter-disciplinary aspects of community planning emphasizing the connection of local religious and secular institutions to the promotion of public health. Collaborations with colleagues in the Public Health Sciences Department in the Medical School and the School of Nursing, has created teams that effectively examine the relationship of the built environment to smoking prevention and the control and treatment of diabetes.
