Christian Fürchtegott Gellert

Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715-1769) belongs to the group of German writers and dramatists in the 18th century, such as Klopstock, Wieland and Lessing who prepared German literature for its Classical period of Goethe and Schiller. Gellert's "Lectures on Morality," his weekly self-introspections, his detailed analysis of the foibles of the human heart, his humor and sympathetic tears must have appealed to a woman like Queen Charlotte who lived in a society which prescribed self-control and a stiff upper-lip.
