Jessica Audet:
Jessica is a PhD student in Mathematics Education at the University of
Virginia.
Mary Beck:
Mary is a lecturer in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and an
exceptional teacher. P. Paxton Marshall, associate dean for undergraduate
programs, says that "Based on letters from parents, students and faculty,
it is our belief that Mary is responsible for the retention of more students
in the school [of engineering] than any other faculty member." Mary has
received many recognitions for her outstanding teaching abilities: Teacher of
the Year, Rodman Scholars Program, 2004; Outstanding Teacher, IMP Society,
2001; David Harrison III Award for Excellence in Advising, 2001; Harold
Morton Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching 2000.
Silvia Salinas
Blemker: Silvia is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering and Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UVa.
Silvia received her PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford
University in 2004. In her research, Silvia integrates a variety of
computational and experimental approaches to understand and improve
the treatments for musculoskeletal impairments associated with movement
disorders, such as cerebral palsy. Silvia is an
Excellence in
Diversity Fellow at the University of Virginia in the academic year
2006-2007.
Lorena Bociu :
Lorena is a fifth year PhD student at the University of Virginia. Her research
interests are in the area of Control Theory of Partial Differential Equations.
In recognition of her teaching abilities Lorena received teaching awards from
the
Department of Mathematics in the academic years 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.
Lorena's outreach activities include presentations on "Careers in the
Mathematical Sciences" at the Undergraduate Math Club at UVa and at
the
Girls in Mathematics Summer Program, August 2006.
Andrea Danielle Bodkin: Andrea is a first year PhD student at the University of Virginia.
Ginger Davis: Ginger
is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems and Information
Engineering at the University of Virginia. She received her PhD degree in
Statistics from Rice University in 2006. Ginger is an
Excellence in
Diversity Fellow at the University of Virginia in the academic year
2006-2007.
Adrienne Felt:
Adrienne is a third year undergraduate student with a double major
in computer science and mathematics.
Before coming to UVa Adrienne went to the High Technology High School in
Lincroft, New Jersey.
Karen Valerie Hackett:
Karen is a fourth year undergraduate student in the Curry School of Education
pursuing a concentration in secondary mathematics education. Before coming to
UVa Karen attended the Monticello High School in Charlottesville. After
graduation Karen plans on teaching high school mathematics in Virginia.
Tunde Jakab: Tunde
is a Whyburn Instructor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of
Virginia. Tunde obtained her PhD degree from the University of Missouri in 2006
and her area of expertise is at the interface between Harmonic Analysis and
Partial Differential Equations.
Meredith Wesley
Jennings: Meredith is a third year Math major in the College and in her
third year of a five-year BA/BS-MT program through the Curry School of
Education. She is from Richmond, VA and math was her favorite subject in high
school. Meredith volunteers through Madison House and enjoys working with
elementary-age children. She loves to read and wishes she had more time for

Katherine Heller:
Katherine is a PhD student at the University of Virginia with research
interests in Operator Theory. She was a 2006 finalist for the University-wide
Seven Society Fellowship for Superb Teaching, and has been an
instructor in the
Girls in Mathematics Summer Program, August 2006.
Maureen Lau:
Maureen Lau is a fourth year undergraduate with a concentration in financial mathematics. She attended Chantilly High School in Fairfax, VA. After graduation, she will work for Watson Wyatt as an actuarial consultant.
Tai Melcher:
Tai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the
University of Virginia with an expertise in Probability. Tai received her
PhD degree in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego
and held a postdoctoral position in the Department of Statistics at the
University of California, Berkeley, before joining UVa.
Irina Mitrea:
Irina is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the
University of Virginia. She obtained her PhD degree from the University of
Minnesota in 2000. Her research interests are in the general areas of
Real and Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations.
Katharine Ott:
Katy
is a fourth year PhD student at the University of Virginia. She is the
recipient of several awards, including a 2007-2008 UVa Faculty Senate
Dissertation Year Fellowship for excellence in teaching and
research, as well as one of the 14 nationally awarded 2006 AAAS Mass Media
Science and Engineering Fellowship sponsored by the Society for Industrial
and Applied Mathematics. Katy was selected as one of 26 participants
from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering
and Applied Science in the Tomorrow's Professor Today Program for
the academic year 2006-2007.
Katie Quertermous:
Katie is a PhD student at the University of Virginia with research
interests in the area of Operator Theory. Katie was also
selected as one of 26 participants
from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering
and Applied Science in the Tomorrow's Professor Today Program for
the academic year 2006-2007.
Rebecca Schmitz:
Rebecca is a PhD student at the University of Virginia with research interests
in the area of Operator Theory. Rebecca's teaching abilities were recognized
by teaching awards from the Department
of Mathematics in the academic years 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.
In 2007, Rebecca received the All-University Teaching Award for Mathematics,
Sciences and Engineering, sponsored by the
Teaching Resource Center at UVa. Rebecca has been involved in the past few
years in the efforts made by our department to cooperate with the high schools
in the area.
