| The 2001 Williamsburg
Film Festival was held at the Holiday Inn Patriot in Williamsburg,
Virginia. Among the guests was to be William
Smith, a man upon whom I have had a crush since I was seven years
old. Was there any way on God's green Earth I would miss this festival
so near my home? No way Joe Riley!
Still, I have to admit that I always know a certain hesitation in
meeting favorite people, because one is generally happier admiring
an "imaginary" person than being disappointed in the real
person. While Mr. Smith makes a truly terrifying villain, I always
had the feeling from his rare good guy roles that this was a person
I would like---there was something in his face, or his eyes, that
made me think he was a gentle person at heart. I cannot put into words
my delight at finding I had been right about him. |

The
autograph table, 22 February. At one point on this day, I heard someone
coaxing Mr. Smith to take his hat off. He declined at the time, protesting
his ears look funny! (I thought they looked just fine.) |
|
| I was trying
to be unobtrusive, kneeling in the aisle and blocking everyone's way,
setting off my flash...and yet, amazingly, somehow Mr. Smith noticed
me despite my stealth and discretion. I felt so foolish, but he just
smiled. |
