Open Positions: I am looking for motivated students with strong mathematical background. If you are interested, please email me, describing your background and interests.

About me: I am currently an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. Before that, I was a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech. I received my Ph.D. in ECE from UIUC in 2013. I also received an M.Sc. in mathematics from UIUC in 2012 and an M.Sc. in ECE from the University of Toronto in 2008.

My interests include information theory, bioinformatics/computational biology, and machine learning. I particularly gravitate towards problems that lie in the intersections of these areas, such as ordinal data fusion and its application to gene prioritization, mathematical and information-theoretic modeling of DNA mutations, compression of biological sequences, and sorting algorithms for large data streams. I also work on rank modulation codes for flash memories with higher data density, faster reprogramming, and longer life span.
