If your are unsure whether a company is public or private, WARDS BUSINESS
DIRECTORY is a good place to start. WARDS will indicate whether a company
is public, private or a subsidiary.

8 volumes. INDEX TABLE.
The full record is arranged alphabetically by company in volumes 1 through 3.
Volumes 4 through 8 are geographic and SIC code indices and rankings within them. The full record includes
address, sales, employees, SIC codes with description, officers, fax,
exchange and parent (if they are a division or subsidiary). Includes only U.S.
companies.
STANDARD & POORS STOCK REPORTS. New York: Standard & Poors. Current only;
updated bimonthly. INDEX TABLE.
Consists of 2 volumes.
Excellent source for a current brief report on a public company. Gives a
business summary, recent developments, income, balance sheet and per share
data, capitalization, dividends, etc. Comparable information is available
on DOW JONES NEWS/RETRIEVAL. Contains U.S. and international companies
traded on U.S. exchanges.
HANDBOOK OF COMMON STOCKS. New York: Mergent FIS Inc.
Quarterly. INDEX TABLE.
In concise form gives, for each company listed, background information,
financial data, and prospects. A companion volumes is HANDBOOK OF NASDAQ
STOCKS (INDEX TABLE, quarterly).
VALUE LINE INVESTMENT SURVEY. New York: H. Bernhard & Company. Each
piece updated quarterly. INDEX TABLE.
A major investment service that gives "Ratings and Reports" on about 1700
stocks in 80 industries. Part 2 of the Survey, in a separate volume, is a
weekly "Selection and Opinions" which gives VALUE LINE's views on business,
the economy, and the stock market, as well as, the VALUE LINE averages.
STANDARD & POORS SECURITY OWNERS STOCK GUIDE. New York: Standard & Poors.
Monthly. INDEX TABLE.
Includes stock price range, earnings, capitalization, dividends, and S & P
ratings for more than 5000 common and preferred stocks.
DAILY STOCK PRICE RECORD. New York: Standard & Poors. Quarterly.
Consists of three separate sets:
- AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE. Reference HG4915.S66
- NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE. Reference HG4915.S664
- NASDAQ. Reference HG4915.S665.
Historical (1962- ) daily and weekly record of volume, high, low and closing
prices of stocks and market indicators.

MERGENT DIVIDEND RECORD. New York: Mergent FIS Inc. Annual.

Covers more than 12,000 issues, 9000 common and preferred dividend-paying
stocks, 900 nonpaying issues and payments on approximately 2350 bond funds.
Gives amount and date as well as information on liability of dividends, stock
splits, and dividend record.
THE OUTLOOK. New York: Standard & Poors Corp. Weekly. INDEX TABLE.
Analyzes and projects business and stock market trends. Includes brief
data on individual securities, with purchase/sell recommendations; also current
S & P stock market indices.
SRC BLUE BOOK: 12-YEAR NYSE CHARTS. Wellesley Hills, MA: Securities
Research. Quarterly. INDEX TABLE.
Provides a 12-year graphic presentation of prices, earnings, and dividends
for 1108 leading listed stocks.
SRC ORANGE BOOK: 12-YEAR NASDAQ CHARTS. Wellesley Hills, MA:
Securities Research. Quarterly. INDEX TABLE.
Provides a long-term graphic presentation of price ranges, relative market
action, moving averages and volume of 1012 OTC stocks.
SRC RED BOOK: 2-YEAR NYSE CHARTS. Wellesley Hills, MA: Securities
Research. Monthly. INDEX TABLE.
Provides a 21-month graphic presentation of prices, earnings, and dividends
for 1108 leading listed stocks. Information is provided on a weekly basis and
also includes quarterly and annual figures.
ANNUAL REPORTS / SEC FILINGS:
Annual reports & SEC filings are available in the following locations:
- The library maintains a collection of annual reports for approximately
1500 of the largest U.S. and international corporations. The collection is
arranged alphabetically by company in the vertical file cabinets in the
Career/Placement Library. We maintain a 3-year file for each company.
Included is a complete collection of Virginia public companies.
- SEC'S EDGAR
- SEC FILINGS is company SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) filings
available on microfiche. It includes annual reports, proxys, and 10-Ks for
all U.S. and many international public companies beginning with 1981. The
collection is located in the Microform Room. Use the index (either on fiche
or bound in loose-leaf binders on top of the fiche cabinets) to locate the
report you need.
- Many companies put their annual reports on the World Wide Web. Directories
of companies on the web include:
BLOOMBERG. New York: Bloomberg L.P. (Online.)
BLOOMBERG is an online and interactive database for investment management.
It covers all securities in all markets and maintains indepth data on financial
instruments. It is only available through the two dedicated workstations
located in the Library.
BLOOMBERG does have a webpage.
INVESTEXT. Foster City, CA: Information Access Company (SearchBank).
(Online.)
INVESTEXT is comprised of more than 320,000 full-text reports written by
analysts at over 180 investment banks and research firms worldwide. Coverage
includes 14,000 companies worldwide and 53 industry groups.
INVESTEXT is
part of Infotrac and is only available within the University of Virginia's electronic community.
DOW JONES NEWS/RETRIEVAL. Princeton, NJ: Dow Jones. (Online.)
DOW JONES NEWS/RETRIEVAL is the only electronic source that includes full-text
of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Their publications library also includes more
than 3200 business, trade and news publications. The Company and Industry
Data, which includes company stock and financial performance, is of particular
interest to investors.
DOW JONES
is only available within the University of Virginia's electronic community.
RESEARCH INSIGHT. New York: Standard & Poors Compustat. (Updated annually.)
RESEARCH INSIGHT contains financial information for approximately 14,165 companies
of which approximately 7700 (including 549 Canadian) are currently in business
and 6480 are bankrupt, went private, no longer report, or were liquidated.
Data history is up to 20 years for all companies. PDE monthly prices
database history covers 1962 to present with a daily stock price history of
five years. Approximately 275 industry aggregates are included. Over 76
company formatted reports are available.
RESEARCH INSIGHT
is only available at the Darden School.

locate books on a particular company or investment topic, do a keyword search,
for example, APPLE COMPUTER AND HISTORY.
