Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill, elegant but down-at-heel inner London suburb, was a centre for post-war arrivals from the West Indies.

The two day summer Carnival, Europe's largest street party, grew from a neighbourhood children's event in the mid '60's. Although now involving almost the whole mix of London's ethnic groups, it retains its basis in the Trinidadian tradition, with steel drums and bands of masqueraders in elaborate costumes.

In the heart of the area, pumping kilowatts of high voltage energy, are the many sound systems with high-piled speaker stacks. Each has its dense packed crowd of fans throbbing to its beat.

I'm there in the middle of them, clutching a wide angle and a Red Stripe. Come and join me - have fun, this is Carnival...
