CARL T. HERAKOVICH

Henry L. Kinnier Professor (Emeritus)

Carl T. Herakovich is Emeritus Professor of Applied Mechanics at the University of Virginia. Prior to his retirement in May 1998, he was the Henry L. Kinnier Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Applied Mechanics Program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Professor Herakovich’s primary research interest is mechanics of composite materials. Research activities of particular interest include nonlinear material response, damage and failure, micromechanics,  interlaminar stresses,  finite element modelling  and test methods. He is the author of the  text Mechanics of Fibrous Composites (John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1998). In addition, he has published 132 papers in journals and conference proceedings, and edited six books.  Fifty-four graduate students completed degrees under his direction. He has been a principal investigator on numerous funded research  projects, held leading positions in several professional societies, given lectures at many locations around the world, and served in a number of administrative positions.

Herakovich is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Academy of Mechanics, the Society of Engineering Science, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is a past ASME Vice President - Basic Engineering, past Member and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME, and past President, Secretary and Member of the Board of the Society of Engineering Science. In 1996 he was appointed by the National Research Council as a member of the U.S. National Committee on Theoretical & Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) and has served as Secretary of USNC/TAM since he was elected to that position in 2000. He has been a United States delegate to the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics since 1998.  He has served on the editorial boards of several leading journals in mechanics.  He received the ASME Applied Mechanics Division Award in 2005.

Herakovich earned his PhD in Mechanics from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1968. His dissertation, a finite element solution to a plastic unloading problem, was written under the direction of Professor Philip Hodge. Herakovich was a member of the faculty in the Engineering Science & Mechanics Department at Virginia Tech from 1967-1987. He conceived the idea of the NASA-Virginia Tech Composites Program and served as its Director from its inception in 1974 until he left Virginia Tech in 1987. Ninety-one graduates students received degrees in this program during its twenty-two year existence. He served as Chairman of the faculty committee which recommended the requirement of personal computers for all engineering students at Virginia Tech in the Fall of 1984. Three summers were spent at NASA’s Langley Research Center and sabbaticals were completed at Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France (1980-81) and École Normale Supérieure De Cachan, Universite Paris 6, Cachan, France, (1993). He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia with a two-year appointment to the Center for Advanced Studies in 1987.  His master’s degree (thesis: an experimental investigation of unstable vortex formation in pipe flow) is in Mechanics from the University of Kansas (1962), and the BS is in Civil Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (1959).

In addition to serving as the Director of the NASA-Virginia Tech Composites Program,  administrative experience includes serving as the  inaugural Director of the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology Institute for Materials Science and Engineering from February 1984 to January 1986. In this capacity, he had overall responsibility for the development and operation of the Institute. As director of the Applied Mechanics Program at the University of Virginia (1987-98), he coordinated an engineering school-wide graduate program. He was Director of the Center for High Temperature Composite Materials at UVa, a center funded in 1993 under a AFOSR University Research Initiative grant. He was also an elected member of the University of Virginia Faculty Senate as well as the School of Engineering and Applied Science Faculty Council, of which he was elected Chair for 1996-97.

Herakovich officiated 152 regular season and ten bowl games during his seventeen year career as an Atlantic Coast Conference Football Official.
